SIBU: FED UP with the theft of trees and shrubs lining roads and public places, the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) is collaborating with a local developer to provide free saplings to residents.

SRDC deputy chairman Robert Lau Hui Yew said he wanted to make it easier for them to acquire the plants for free.

“I have spoken to Distrepark Sdn Bhd, the master developer of SibuJaya Township, to provide free saplings to residents and they have agreed,” he said.

For a start, 1,000 free saplings have been allocated for residents who must prove they live in the township.

Each resident is allowed a maximum of two saplings while those residing in a corner unit, can ask for more.

Lau said the developer may give more if there is demand.

“So please stop stealing and start planting,” he said.

With that, Lau hoped people would not resort to stealing as their act was hampering SRDC’s landscaping work.

He commended Distrepark for their efforts in beautifying SibuJaya.

“The developer has gone beyond just meeting the requirements,” said Lau.

Even though certain roads had been handed over to SRDC, the developer continued to support the council by providing additional landscaping support.

“I have gone to their in-house nursery, and am impressed at how passionate they are in creating a green environment in SibuJaya,” he said.

SibuJaya had undergone a major transformation under Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg when he was Housing Minister.

The township has collected several awards for its masterplan, residential and commercial development.

To collect the free saplings, residents can visit the developer’s office at Lot 1191, Jalan SibuJaya Timur or call 084-235 888 for details.
